Bangor Daily News Visit

Bangor Daily News paper is one of the leading paper in the United State especially in Maine City. It is family owned, which amazed me a lot. The founder being Richard J. Warren.

This family challenged me so much, on how they managed to sustain the business for five generations.

Apart from being a news paper, the company established the new media department known as e media, whereby news from the hard copy are sent to the webpage to meet customers' needs.

Thinking that the e media could have detrimental effects over the company, we paused questions Jeff Tuttle, who is an online editor so as we could investigate what the online contributes to the company.

Jeff, had to use extra energy so as to convince us the e media plays a great role to sustain the company through the generated income.

He said many people view and read the paper online at the expense of ads space fee. In return the company also gets the story hints, feedbacks on the news printed.

The revenue generated through the adverts contributes about 30% of the total revenue. The adverts ranges from social issues such as wedding announcements, funeral to business.

However, the e media department faces challenges one being used as platform for people who are in bad terms to exchange words through the comments.

Interviewing the Bangor Daily News Paper Managing Director, Michael J. Dowd on how the company carries out various activities, he had the following to say:

Bangor Daily News Paper Circulation:

It has a circulation capacity of about 55,000 copies per day. These copies can be delivered either indoors (home delivery) or delivered to agencies which sell the newspaper in streets.

News gathering:

Starts after the morning meeting which evaluates the previous newspapers to see the areas which need to be improved and areas of strength.

The postmortem meeting also cites out the news ideas and journalists are assigned news to cover.

We had an opportunity to ask various questions during the session, which helped us a lot to understand the in depth the history of various problems such as flood, pets which seems to be news of the day.

News Processing:

After covering the news the journalists writes them in computers and wire them to their editors who after editing them approve to be printed.

The process ends up to huge printing machines which do unbelievable job though bought in 1964.

Moreover, he said, the news paper has different editions, State Edition, Coastal and Community

News ranges from Health, Education , community news which are written in Weekly

The paper also includes the sports news, style and business.

The Newspaper is bigger compared to Tanzanian news paper which have lower number of publications and coverage. Thus to us it was a big challenge and we learned a lot.

Ends.
